Why TSMC’s Record Quarter Caused a 5% Stock Plunge

Investors grapple with the paradox of soaring profits and crushing capital expenditure demands.

This evidence cluster is principally an analysis of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC), rather than of Apple Inc. (AAPL) itself. Its relevance to Apple lies in the supply chain: TSMC remains a critical manufacturer for Apple’s AI-related semiconductor ecosystem, including the A17 chip, while Apple’s selective U.S. localization may support TSMC’s Arizona expansion 13,79. The appropriate interpretation is therefore as a supplier- and industry-context note, not as direct evidence on Apple’s valuation, earnings, product demand, or capital returns.

The central distinction is between TSMC’s exceptionally strong operating fundamentals and unsettled near-term market signals. TSMC is described as the world’s largest and dominant contract foundry, with superior advanced-node capabilities and exposure to Nvidia, Apple, artificial-intelligence computing, and cloud infrastructure 2,3,5,12,16,20,23,30,37,39,49,69. Yet its shares have pulled back from recent highs, with bearish MACD readings, an oversold RSI, and conflicting Ichimoku-cloud signals 6,7,9,10,11,15,18,19,20,24,25,27,28,29,30,31,32,33,34,36,38,54,55,56,57,58,59,60,62,63,68,69,70,71. For Apple investors, this divergence matters because TSMC’s capacity, pricing power, and execution affect chip availability, component costs, and the feasibility of Apple’s AI-related product roadmap.

Operating Performance and Capacity Expansion

Record growth, stronger guidance, and concentrated demand

The most consistent evidence concerns TSMC’s operating performance. Multiple sources report a record quarter, including revenue of $40.2 billion—approximately $900 million above estimates—and net income growth of 77% year over year 43,76. Other reported indicators include Q1 revenue of $35.71 billion, June revenue growth of 68% year over year, revenue growth of 40.6% year over year, and prior net-profit growth of 58% 4,40,42,43,47. TSMC was also described as having reached record profit levels and as moving toward a fourth consecutive record quarter 1,4,43,65.

Forward guidance was similarly constructive. TSMC projected third-quarter revenue of $44.6–$45.8 billion, implying a 12% sequential increase, and raised its full-year revenue-growth outlook to slightly above 40% 43,65. The demand commentary remains strong: the monthly report indicated no slowdown, while foundry demand was described as both strong and capacity constrained 47,49,51,77,85. Artificial-intelligence end markets are carrying overall performance even as mature-node demand shrinks, creating a favorable mix shift for TSMC but concentrating growth in a narrower set of customers and applications 43. Quarterly free cash flow above $10 billion further supports the company’s ability to finance expansion 78.

The important qualification is that this growth requires substantial capital. TSMC raised its 2026 capital-expenditure outlook to $60–$64 billion from $52–$56 billion, a change corroborated by several sources 45,52,53,66. The company is also associated with a $265 billion investment plan, 13 fabs in Taiwan, accelerated Arizona capacity for AI chips, and an additional $100 billion U.S. manufacturing commitment 72,82,84. An earlier U.S. pledge reportedly increased from $65 billion during the Biden administration, although the chronology and scope of these investment figures are not fully reconciled in the source material 82.

The market’s response illustrates the difference between strong current earnings and the economics of long-run capacity creation. Despite the 77% profit increase and substantial earnings beat, TSMC shares reportedly fell more than 4% and sold off 5% after the quarterly report, while the broader semiconductor and AI-linked group remained under pressure 66,76,77,87. Such a reaction is not necessarily a judgment on demand. Rather, it reflects the possibility that capital intensity, overseas construction, and ramp costs will pressure margins and free cash flow before new facilities contribute materially to output.

Margins must be read alongside the investment cycle

TSMC’s absolute profitability remains impressive, but the reported margin figures are not entirely consistent. One account places gross margin at 67.7%, above the top of the company’s own range, while another cites 66.2%; JPMorgan characterized second-quarter gross margin as a slight miss 14,43,44. These figures may refer to different periods, definitions, or estimates. The discrepancy should nevertheless be retained in the analysis because it demonstrates that robust margins can coexist with sensitivity to product mix, overseas-fab costs, and investor expectations.

For Apple, the implication is conditional. TSMC’s investment protects long-run access to leading-edge capacity, but the associated quasi-rents may be accompanied by near-term cost pressure. The relevant question is not simply whether TSMC is profitable, but how quickly new capacity reaches normal utilization and whether its returns compensate for the additional fixed commitments.

Scarcity, Pricing Power, and the Foundry Moat

Capacity constraints create negotiating leverage

A second major theme is TSMC’s ability to monetize scarcity. The company held discussions with clients concerning 5–10% base-price increases and was reportedly seeking price increases of up to 10% for 2027 chipmaking 44,83. The proposal itself is less informative than customer acceptance: the operational question is whether buyers will agree to the increases and absorb higher wafer costs 44. TSMC’s full-capacity position and customers’ limited access to alternative foundries reinforce the negotiating leverage implied by these discussions 47,49.

This is favorable for TSMC’s revenue and competitive position, but it creates a direct trade-off for customers such as Apple. Higher prices may raise component costs or make allocation less flexible, particularly during product ramps. At the same time, pricing power can enable TSMC to continue investing ahead of demand, which is favorable for Apple’s long-run access to advanced nodes. We must therefore distinguish between the immediate incidence of a price increase and its possible effect on the future supply of leading-edge capacity.

A structural advantage, but not an unconstrained one

The cluster consistently portrays TSMC as the dominant third-party manufacturer of advanced chips, with a structural foundry advantage, durable demand, and capabilities ahead of competing major chipmakers 3,5,12,16,20,23,33,37,39,49. Claims that TSMC produces roughly 90% of cutting-edge chips and about half of global silicon or computer-related chips illustrate the concentration of the ecosystem. The broader 50% estimates come from individual sources and should therefore be treated as directional rather than precise 46,83.

The moat rests not only on installed capacity, but also on process knowledge, yields, supplier relationships, and accumulated customer coordination. TSMC’s Arizona facility is described as using highly advanced process technology available in the United States and producing tens of millions of chips. Current Arizona output, however, is still characterized as less than 5% of leading-edge production, making it a diversification mechanism rather than a near-term substitute for Taiwan 13,75.

Artificial-intelligence demand, Nvidia exposure, and cloud computing reinforce this position, while competitors face substantial difficulty replicating TSMC’s yields and process ecosystem. China is attempting to reproduce TSMC’s capabilities, and uncertainty remains over whether Intel can improve its yields sufficiently to match TSMC 12,49. TSMC’s leading-edge alternatives are needed because demand is growing faster than available capacity 47. For Apple, this supports technical competitiveness and supply-chain access, but it also creates exposure to a concentrated supplier and to geopolitical risk. China risk was specifically cited as a factor keeping TSMC’s share price muted 83.

Technical and Valuation Context

Support remains visible, but the reversal is unconfirmed

The technical picture has weakened from the stronger setup reported earlier in July. TSM traded above its 50-day moving average in multiple observations and remains above its 200-day moving average, which has repeatedly held as support 6,7,9,11,15,18,19,20,25,27,28,29,32,35,38,54,55,58,60,64,68,69. Several sources consequently characterize the long-term trend as intact, with no confirmed structural breakdown 9,18,32,34,38,58.

The reported buy-zone analysis placed support or accumulation interest at $400–$442, while an AI trading signal cited a $430.20 entry and a BUY/DCA recommendation 17,80. Dark-pool activity was also mixed: one report identified a $216 million purchase across three prints with no sells, whereas another recorded a net $188 million sale, with both tapes agreeing on selling activity 73,74. These flow indicators are consequently inconclusive.

The more recent readings are less constructive. MACD remains negative or bearish, and no bullish crossover has occurred 6,7,18,20,24,28,29,34,54,56,58,59,62. RSI is deeply oversold, with one reading at 25.7, which indicates rebound potential but does not establish a durable bottom 15,17,25,29,30,54,55,56,57,58,59,60,62,63,67,70. The latest technical commentary therefore recommends waiting for a bullish MACD crossover before acting 55.

Ichimoku evidence is directly conflicting. Earlier reports placed TSM above the cloud or described cloud support as intact 6,11,17,18,19,20,26,32,35,38,64. More recent observations place the stock below the cloud, while also stating that no definitive cloud or structural break has occurred 11,27,29,54,56,58,59. Different observation dates or chart settings may explain the divergence, but the appropriate conclusion is that the signal is mixed rather than decisively bullish. Market sentiment is cautious without appearing panicked; positive or neutral news and cloud support have reportedly helped hold the price line 30,63.

The pullback has included an earlier decline of approximately 6.67% to $445.43, an 8–9% retreat from recent or 52-week highs, and a subsequent pre-market reference near $434.11, alongside one report of a 4% pre-market gain 10,18,35,38,41,44,71. The semiconductor backdrop has also become less uniform: SMH was reported up 200% over a period of months, while SOXX was down nearly 20% over the preceding month but remained up 57.5% year to date 86,88. This divergence suggests that valuation, positioning, and sector rotation—not operating fundamentals alone—are influencing short-term price action.

Lower-confidence signals should remain secondary

Several claims are materially less corroborated than the earnings, capital-expenditure, and moving-average evidence. These include a Japanese earthquake-related production halt 48, a bullish August 21 465-call purchase with a $1.7 million premium and 11.3% out-of-the-money positioning 50, and a market-capitalization estimate of $2.069 trillion ranking TSM sixth 81. Such items may provide event or positioning context, but they should not outweigh the multi-source operating data.

Similarly, a portfolio holding, Bluesky references, price-dip commentary, and ticker-identification claims are contextual rather than investment-grade evidence 8,11,20,21,22,26,33,34,61,62.

Implications for Apple

For Apple, the most important conclusion is that TSMC’s strategic value is increasing even as its shares enter a technically unsettled phase. AI-led growth, leading-edge dominance, full capacity, and aggressive capital investment suggest that Apple’s access to advanced process technology remains strategically protected, particularly as Apple participates in AI-related semiconductor demand through its supply chain 43,67,79. Selective U.S. localization by Apple may also support TSMC’s Arizona expansion and reduce some political or geographic concentration risk, although Arizona’s current contribution remains small relative to Taiwan production 13,75.

The counterforce is rising input-cost and allocation pressure. Proposed 5–10% price increases, constrained capacity, and TSMC’s need to fund a large global fab buildout could raise the cost of Apple’s chips or limit flexibility in product ramps 44,45,66,72,83. Conversely, TSMC’s margins and pricing power indicate that it can continue investing ahead of demand, a condition that favors Apple’s long-run access to advanced nodes. The divergence between robust AI demand and shrinking mature-node demand also suggests that Apple’s exposure is most valuable where it is tied to leading-edge and AI-enabled products rather than commoditized components 43.

The evidence does not address Apple’s revenue, margins, iPhone demand, services growth, capital returns, or valuation directly. It should therefore not be used to establish a standalone AAPL price target. Its proper use is as a supply-chain and competitive-positioning input. Under current conditions, TSMC’s fundamentals support the resilience of Apple’s advanced-chip ecosystem, while capacity pricing, geopolitical concentration, and technical volatility remain risks to monitor. The resulting assessment is fundamentally bullish but tactically cautious: there is no confirmed long-term breakdown, but neither is there a validated technical reversal.
