SpaceX's AI Splurge: Bullish for NVIDIA, Bearish for the Bottom Line

Revenue jumps 92% while losses and capex surge—the $100 billion NVIDIA windfall bet rests on unproven returns

The central subject of this evidence cluster is SpaceX rather than NVIDIA Corporation. Its significance for NVIDIA lies in a broader question: whether SpaceX’s proposed expansion into artificial intelligence, orbital computing and cloud infrastructure could become a material source of demand for accelerated computing, networking equipment and data-centre systems. The investment narrative is consequential because extraordinary revenue ambitions are being pursued alongside equally extraordinary capital intensity.

SpaceX reportedly generated approximately $7.8 billion of revenue in the second quarter of 2026, an increase of 92% year over year and ahead of consensus expectations of roughly $6.93 billion 28,31,38. Yet the company also reported a quarterly net loss of $541 million 31,38, while quarterly capital expenditure was reported at $18.4 billion 29,31. For NVIDIA, the immediate question is therefore not SpaceX’s current earnings power, but whether its investment programme creates a durable and economically meaningful customer relationship. One claim suggests that SpaceX’s initial deployment could contribute approximately $100 billion in revenue to NVIDIA 28. This figure is highly speculative and should not be treated as a forecast; it is best understood as an indication of the scale of the demand narrative.

Primary Evidence: Growth Without Present Profitability

The most robust tendency in the claims is the divergence between rapid top-line expansion and weak current profitability. SpaceX’s second-quarter revenue of approximately $7.8 billion exceeded expectations 28,31, while reported year-over-year growth reached 92% 38. Nevertheless, the company remained loss-making 30. The $541 million quarterly loss represented approximately 6.9% of revenue 38, and the Space operations segment alone recorded an operating loss of approximately $542 million 34. The inductive conclusion is that headline growth is presently being purchased through substantial investment and operating drag rather than through mature free-cash-flow generation. SpaceX is described as cash-flow negative and not yet financially self-sustaining 16,19,27.

The revenue mix provides a more discriminating view of this expansion. Historical estimates place 2023 Space and Connectivity revenue at $3.557 billion and $3.869 billion, respectively, while estimated total revenue reached $14.015 billion in 2024 27. Connectivity was the largest reported revenue segment in 2025, accounting for approximately 61% of estimated total revenue, and it led growth from 2023 through 2025 27. More recent figures show Connectivity revenue of $4.291 billion and quarterly operating income of $1.656 billion 34, indicating that Starlink-related recurring cash flow remains the principal financial foundation 34.

This foundation is not without tension. Connectivity average revenue per user reportedly declined by more than 22% 34, raising a distinction between subscriber-scale growth and the quality of monetisation. The cluster also identifies uncertainty around subscriber growth and demand 30, together with the risk of deteriorating Starlink margins 34. Thus, the more established business may be financing the AI expansion, but the durability of that support remains an empirical question.

AI Growth and Capital Intensity

AI is growing more rapidly than the existing businesses, but remains economically immature. The segment reportedly generated approximately $2.561 billion of second-quarter revenue, up roughly 247.5% year over year, while recording an operating loss of approximately $1.257 billion 34. Other claims cite $1.1 billion of adjusted EBITDA 29 and an AI division operating loss of $2.5 billion in the first quarter 1,5,29. These discrepancies imply that segment definitions, reporting periods or accounting measures may differ and should not be reconciled without primary documentation.

AI represented roughly one-third of quarterly revenue 34, while quarterly AI capital expenditure was approximately $15.828 billion against $2.561 billion of revenue 34. First-half AI capital expenditure was separately estimated at $23.551 billion 34, broadly consistent with first-quarter AI capex of $7.723 billion and subsequent acceleration 2,3,22,29,34. The evidence therefore supports a clear interpretation: SpaceX is prioritising the creation of compute capacity over near-term returns. Capital intensity is here a present sacrifice made in anticipation of future productive utility; the difficulty is that the future return remains asserted rather than demonstrated.

The Orbital-Computing Proposition

The proposed AI and orbital-computing programme is the principal strategic development in the cluster. SpaceX reportedly announced an $18 billion AI capital-expenditure plan 32, alongside a stated path toward $100 billion of annual recurring revenue by year-end 32. Additional cloud contracts worth $6.7 billion were reportedly signed, with revenue expected to begin ramping in October 2026 and to be recognised over six months 28,29. Management maintains that available compute capacity is being monetised successfully and carries high incremental EBITDA margins 28.

The rational case for the programme is substantial: if contracted demand is genuine, if compute capacity can be deployed on schedule, and if incremental margins are as high as claimed, then aggressive reinvestment may be economically expedient. Yet the opposing case is equally important. The claimed sub-one-year payback period, 2 GW/10 GW deployment schedule and exclusive reliance on NVIDIA expose the model to execution, financing, power-supply, customer-concentration and vendor-concentration risks 32. Until these conditions are corroborated, the programme should be treated as a high-value option rather than established productive capacity.

Third-party analyses project a potential SpaceX compute-revenue run rate above $300 billion 26. Other scenarios assume $300 billion of revenue by 2030 13,26,27 or $350 billion by 2030 27. These are forecasts, not reported results. The cluster expressly cautions that they are vulnerable to survivorship bias, execution failure, power shortages, customer concentration and narrative overreach 26. Longer-term aspirations—including $1 trillion of revenue, daily Starship launches and a 100-fold expansion in Starlink capacity—should likewise be interpreted as probability-weighted optionality rather than near-term operating evidence 29,36.

Financing Capacity and Valuation Discipline

SpaceX possesses meaningful liquidity, but not an unlimited capacity to finance an indefinitely expanding capital programme. At June 30, the company held approximately $93.522 billion of cash and $6.487 billion of marketable securities, or roughly $100 billion of liquidity 29,34. Debt and finance-lease obligations were approximately $39.512 billion, although other claims describe the balance as less than $40 billion 34. First-half capital expenditure reached $28.5 billion, while reported capex growth of 550% brought quarterly spending to $18.4 billion 23,34. The proposed $18 billion plan therefore represents substantial reinvestment rather than near-term shareholder distributions 32, and the cost of financing remains a strategic variable 38. Claims citing a $25 billion bond offering and approximately $1.5 billion of annual interest expense further illustrate the potential burden should debt financing expand 35.

Valuation introduces a second, independent source of tension. At approximately $110 per share and approximately 13.18 billion shares outstanding, SpaceX’s implied equity value was approximately $1.45 trillion 34. Other reports cite market capitalisation between $1.4 trillion and $1.5 trillion, a $1.7 trillion value based on publicly traded shares, or $1.77 trillion in a financing transaction 20,22,37. Against annualised second-quarter revenue of approximately $31.3 billion, the implied valuation is roughly 46.5 times sales 34. Other commentary places the multiple at approximately 77–100 times expected or current revenue 4,6,14,19,22. The dispersion reflects differences in the revenue denominator and share count rather than one settled valuation measure.

A conventional 25-times-sales framework applied to annualised revenue produces approximately $781 billion of equity value, or roughly 46% downside from the $1.45 trillion implied valuation 34. Conversely, a bullish 2030 framework applies seven times enterprise value to $350 billion of revenue and produces approximately $2.45 trillion of enterprise value before an unspecified net-debt adjustment. The associated target of $157.14 per share depends on the revenue forecast, a 14-billion share count and continued investor willingness to finance heavy capex 27. These divergent outcomes demonstrate that valuation is being determined primarily by long-range assumptions, technological execution, Elon Musk-related investor confidence and access to financing rather than current free cash flow 27.

Data Quality and the Need for Verification

The empirical record contains conflicts that materially constrain the precision of any financial model. Some claims state that SpaceX is publicly traded and has issued its first quarterly report 21,28,36, while another relatively well-corroborated claim describes it as privately held 8,9,15,17,18,23,24. The share count varies between approximately 13 billion and 13.18 billion 10,11,12,13,34. Eligible insider shares of approximately 911.5 million represented more than $100 billion of potential mark-to-market supply at approximately $110 per share 33,34.

Reported post-earnings share-price reactions range from an 8% after-hours decline to approximately 11–12% and 13.6% 22,30,34. Although the magnitude differs, the direction is consistent: investor response was negative despite a revenue beat 25,36. Segment revenue figures also span differing periods and estimates, including AI revenue of $3.201 billion in 2025 3,7,27,29, $2.33 billion expected for the second quarter 19, and $2.561 billion reportedly realised 34. Primary-document verification is therefore necessary before these figures are incorporated into a formal valuation or earnings model.

Implications for NVIDIA

The strategic implication for NVIDIA is that the market for accelerated computing may broaden beyond conventional hyperscalers. SpaceX operates across aerospace, satellite communications, AI and technology infrastructure 35. Its orbital-computing ambitions could create demand for GPUs, networking equipment, software and related systems in environments where power, cooling, latency and physical deployment are unusually demanding. If the reported reliance on NVIDIA is accurate 32, SpaceX could become both a sizeable incremental customer and a high-visibility validation of NVIDIA’s platform outside traditional data centres.

The claims do not, however, establish a booked NVIDIA order, a purchase commitment or recognised NVIDIA revenue. The potential $100 billion contribution to NVIDIA 28 must therefore be treated as an upside scenario rather than an earnings estimate. The appropriate near-term evidence consists of the conversion of SpaceX’s $6.7 billion cloud contracts into recognised revenue 28, proof that AI capex is producing positive incremental cash flow, confirmation of the 2 GW/10 GW rollout, and disclosure of the hardware mix and supplier concentration. Until these milestones become visible, SpaceX’s spending represents a demand option for NVIDIA, not a dependable component of NVIDIA’s forecast.

The broader competitive signal is nevertheless favourable. SpaceX’s AI revenue growth, contracted cloud demand and management claims of high incremental EBITDA margins suggest that customers may be willing to pay for scarce compute capacity 28,29,34. At the same time, quarterly capex of approximately 2.36 times quarterly revenue 23 demonstrates the financing sensitivity of the present AI buildout. For NVIDIA, this supports the case for continued structural demand for accelerated computing, while simultaneously increasing exposure to customer funding capacity, project delays, power constraints and concentration risk.

Conclusion: A Demand Option, Not Yet an Earnings Fact

The probability of a favourable long-term tendency in AI infrastructure demand is material, and SpaceX may enlarge NVIDIA’s addressable market in a strategically distinctive manner. Yet the available evidence describes a company pursuing rapid capacity creation while remaining loss-making and cash-flow negative, despite approximately $100 billion of liquidity 16,27,28,29,31,34,38. The proposed $300–$350 billion SpaceX compute and revenue outcomes, together with the potential $100 billion NVIDIA contribution, remain third-party or scenario claims rather than verified financial performance 26,27,28.

The principal variables are therefore execution, financing, power availability, contract conversion and the emergence of positive AI cash returns. SpaceX’s exceptionally high capex relative to revenue makes these variables decisive 23,32,38. Investors assessing NVIDIA should monitor contract recognition, GPU procurement disclosures and evidence of cash profitability before incorporating SpaceX into NVIDIA earnings estimates. The sound conclusion is neither dismissal nor credulity: SpaceX constitutes a potentially consequential demand option for NVIDIA, but its intrinsic value cannot yet be separated from the speculative assumptions that sustain its extraordinary valuation.
