Alphabet Bull vs Bear: Cheap at 17x or Costly at 79x?

Strong Cloud growth and cash reserves face negative free cash flow and paused buybacks

Alphabet’s central valuation problem is not the absence of operating strength. It is that the market price can appear moderate or demanding depending on whether one treats reported earnings, recurring operating earnings, or residual cash flow as the relevant means by which shareholders may ultimately be served. This distinction is fundamental. A price is not made cheap merely because the denominator of a valuation ratio is temporarily enlarged. Reported Q2 FY2026 diluted EPS was $9.11, but $6.26 per share was attributed to gains on equity securities, leaving $2.85 per share from the remainder of the business in one decomposition. 176 The supplied material further identifies most Q2 other income as unrealized gains on Alphabet’s stock investments and says management attributed the increase in net income primarily to these gains. 181,186,200,222 These marks may affect reported income, but they do not constitute cash generated by advertising, Cloud, or the other operating activities on which the enterprise’s continuing value must rest.

The consequence is plain: the frequently reported trailing P/E near 17x is a useful market observation, but an incomplete valuation conclusion. A Strong Franchise Is Financing a More Capital-Intensive Future

Alphabet retains material financial capacity. These facts establish capacity, not a predetermined outcome. The company is directing capital toward AI and data-center infrastructure, with management described as prioritizing compute over shareholder returns. 183,244 In Q2, Alphabet reported negative free cash flow of $5.9 billion, repeatedly characterized in the material as its first negative quarterly free-cash-flow result. 51,54,55,59,60,61,64,65,66,73,74,77,78,79,89,92,98,101,111,117,120,121,123,125,126,130,137,146,148,151,152,154,159,171,206,226,227,228,242 That result does not negate the roughly $90.8 billion of free cash flow reported over the preceding twelve months. 201,209,238 A large annual total can coexist with a negative quarter. Several observations point toward pressure rather than a merely cosmetic quarterly fluctuation. Alphabet retained about $0.12 of free cash flow per sales dollar, below both its three-year average and every major technology peer except Amazon; another claim places free-cash-flow margin at roughly 5% in 2026, down from 18% in 2025. 181,216 The material nevertheless contains an opposing view that Alphabet should remain solidly free-cash-flow positive in 2026. 185 This is the essential unresolved issue, rather than an inconsistency to be concealed: the company’s long-run cash-generating power is well supported, while the duration and economic return of the current infrastructure build-out remain uncertain.

Capital allocation has made this trade-off visible to shareholders. Relative Value Depends on the Chosen Numerator

On conventional earnings and historical comparisons, the shares can plausibly appear inexpensive. A trailing P/E of 17.09x was below a reported five-year median of 23.89x, and was also described as approximately 22% below the median S&P 500 company’s 21.7x P/E. 178,182,193 Morningstar assigned a $433 fair value and described Class A shares as trading at an 18% discount; another report cited an average analyst target implying 12% upside. 13,129,187,231,239 These assessments support a constructive valuation case, but they are discrete methodologies rather than interchangeable estimates of intrinsic value.

The counterevidence is substantial. GOOG’s TTM EV/sales was reported at 9.07 versus a sector median of 1.95, while forward EV/sales stood at 8.11, 35.45% above its five-year average. 203 Forward price/sales was 8.36 against a sector median of 1.12, and price/cash flow was 22.46 versus the cited sector median. 203 These measures indicate that the market is placing a considerable value on each dollar of sales and cash flow, even where the accounting earnings multiple seems restrained.

The apparent disagreement is therefore partly definitional. Alphabet’s TTM GAAP PEG was reported at 0.15, below the sector median of 0.33, while forward non-GAAP PEG was 2.23, 74.58% above the sector median. 203 Forward P/E estimates likewise range from the mid-teens to the mid-20s. 108,131,142,156,177,184,198,205,206,207,211,212,229,242,245,247 Since forward multiples depend on forecast earnings, and some figures use non-GAAP adjusted EPS, variation in forecast periods and adjustments can yield very different ratios without disproving the more stable trailing observation. 189,230 A careful analyst should not turn this measurement diversity into a false precision.

GuruFocus provides the more skeptical endpoint, placing GF Value at $255.39 and describing the contemporaneous market price as 33.5% above that estimate, with the premium identified as a principal risk. 202 This does not establish that the shares are overvalued, any more than a fair-value estimate establishes that they are cheap. It does establish that the valuation case cannot be settled by one ratio. The price formation process is weighing a durable operating franchise against the time preference implicit in years of heavy reinvestment before the resulting AI infrastructure yields demonstrable cash returns.

Market Evidence Confirms an Unsettled Appraisal

The most recent dated price reports, through October 4, show a recovery around the October 2 close: GOOG closed at $340.35, up 1.62%, and GOOGL was quoted at $343.50, up 1.56%. 234,236,243 But this rebound followed declines of roughly 3.7% in both share classes on September 23, and the shares were reported about 15% below their all-time high on October 2. 204,215,237 The reported 52-week range of $235.84 to $408.61 and descriptions of notable volatility are consistent with a market still revising its judgments. 202

Technical measures do not alter the fundamental conclusion. RSI(14) was reported as neutral at 48.788 in one reading, while a later observation gave a daily RSI of 89; shorter-term MA5 and MACD signals were classified Sell, whereas the MA200 and several other indicators were classified Buy. 194,195 The source’s own characterization of moving-average signals as mixed is the sounder interpretation. 194 Such indicators describe changing marginal appraisals in the market; they do not resolve whether current capital spending will earn returns commensurate with its cost.

Institutional positioning is likewise supportive without being unanimous. Berkshire Hathaway’s Alphabet holding was worth $37.8 billion at midyear and was described as its third-largest holding; Berkshire also added 24,541,369 Alphabet shares in Q2 2026. 133,139,141,142,190,219,223 State Street increased its stake by 5.6%, while Amundi added 1,457,371 shares in the second quarter. 233,235,240 Yet CX Institutional reportedly reduced its position by 10.5%, and Pershing Square fully sold Alphabet shares in the preceding quarter. 220,233 These transactions show divergent entrepreneurial judgments about the same uncertain future, not a collective verdict on present value.

The Proper Valuation Question

The appropriate conclusion is consequently conditional. Alphabet may be inexpensive relative to its own reported historical P/E range and selected fair-value estimates, yet expensive on sales, enterprise-value, cash-flow, and operating-earnings measures. 186,187,193,200,203 The next earnings release, identified in one source as October 28, is therefore important not merely as a trading catalyst, but as further evidence on the underlying problem: whether negative quarterly free cash flow was a temporary consequence of capital deployment or the beginning of a more persistent reduction in cash conversion. 175,226

For valuation, the disciplined course is to keep the operating thesis separate from the accounting and capital-allocation thesis. The former is strongly corroborated; the latter remains contested. Until the return on the present infrastructure outlay becomes clearer, a headline P/E near 17x should be treated as a starting point for analysis, not as its conclusion. 131,153,156,164,176,178,182,186,191,221,225,233,234,240,246
